Subsidence and landslip cannot prevent arrival of generator end cover
Alstom asked us to organize the transportation of a generator stator endcover (62 t, 6.2mx4.74mx4.32m) from Milan in Italy to Belfort, France. As the ideal route passes through the Mont Blanc tunnel it was decided to load the equipment on a girder bridge trailer in order to match the maximum height possible for the tunnel (4.45m) at the price of breadth of the whole loading arrangement.
After successfully crawling through the tunnel (2h for 11.6km) a landslide was blocking the onward route. Rather than delay delivery by waiting for this to be cleared, an alternative route was found. To facilitate this, the width of the transport arrangement was reduced in co-operation with Alstom transport engineering. This involved changing the girder bridge trailer to a flat bed trailer in one day, while waiting for all the new permissions to arrive (such paperwork normally takes months). With a total of just 10 days' delay, the equipment arrived safely in Belfort - nothing can stop us.
